The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry wishes to congratulate President Bharrat Jagdeo on being one of the recipients of the prestigious 2010 Champion of the Earth Award by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP).
The Chamber wishes to acknowledge the President Jagdeo’s leadership locally and internationally in advocating for more environmentally conscious practices and for pioneering Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) which has gained tremendous international recognition.
Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) is premised on the concept of Avoided Deforestation which allows Guyana’s 15 million hectares of rainforest to serve as a carbon sink, a process that is critical to combating global climate change.
It must be noted that the Champions of the Earth is the United Nations’ highest awards for environmental leadership and such an achievement must be duly applauded. The Champions of the Earth are also pillars of transition to a 21st-century Green Economy.
The Chamber wishes to once again congratulate President Jagdeo on this accomplishment.
