The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry Inc (GCCI) would like to express its profound sympathy to the Guyanese people, especially those along the coastal areas, who were devastated by the recent floods being the biggest disaster in Guyana’s history. Some were devastated by the lost of love ones; others by losses of cattle and small farms; and others by damages to their personal property and homes. However, the Chamber is aghast over the steep price increases for basic commodities by shopkeepers, retailers, and street vendors in flood-affected areas. This action is a further infliction on the poor and vulnerable in our society since most wholesalers have confirmed that there has been no increase in their prices. The steep price increases occurred in basic commodities such as rice, flour, potatoes, cooking oil, bread, and kerosene. This is in addition to the devastation and acute suffering listed above. Instead of expressing a feeling of love and brotherhood for our fellow man we are causing further hardship on them. The Chamber condemns such unscrupulous behavior and is appealing to all shopkeepers, retailers, and street vendors in flood-affected areas to hold their prices as they were before the flood. Many citizens along the East and West Coast of Demerara, Georgetown, West Berbice and East Bank of Demerara are going through a crisis since food, water, shelter, and health issues remains a major concern. The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry Inc is therefore calling on citizens, business community, civil society, opposition leaders, and government agencies to work in collaboration as a unit so as to bring relief to our fellow brothers and sisters who are suffering because of the flood disaster in our country. By Order of Council.

January 29. 2005
The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry Inc (GCCI) shares with the rest of the nation the pains caused by the floods which disrupted lives and destroyed properties in several parts of the country. The Chamber salutes its Members and other business entities which have responded magnanimously to the suffering currently faced by tens of thousands of our fellow Guyanese. The GCCI is appealing to its Members to show their continued support to the relief efforts by facilitating the cleaning up process and the various health issues and by continuing in the distribution of items. Businesses must also ensure that their prices are reasonable and where applicable reflect the tax concession announced by the Government on imported products. We are also appealing to the various Utility and Hire Purchase Companies and indeed the entire Business Community to extend their understanding and consideration to their employees and customers by actions designed to ameliorate their suffering and to help their lives to return to normal as soon and as far as possible. By Order of Council.
PRESS RELEASE: Asian DisasterDecember 30, 2004.Chamber’s Response to South-East Asia Earthquake-Tsunami Catastrophe. The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry Inc {GCCI} would like to express its profound sympathy to the Asian people, especially the citizens of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Somalia and other surrounding countries, who were devastated by last weekend's earthquake-tsunami catastrophe, being one of the biggest disaster in world history. New figures reveal that at least 114,000 people died in Sunday’s ocean disaster and injuring thousands more. To date the three {3} hardest hit countries are Indonesia with 80,000 deaths, Sri Lanka with 23,000 deaths and India with 7,400 deaths, most of which are children. The Ocean Disaster left many Asian Countries a wasteland of flattened houses and businesses, Public as well as Private properties, sparking new panic and Disease outbreaks. Millions of Asians have little or no water, food or shelter, however relief teams and supplies have started to pour into the region but have yet to reach the hardest-hit and most remote areas. Across the region thousands remain unaccounted for since the 9.0 magnitude undersea earthquake off Sumatra that forced a wall of water smashing into coastlines as far away as east Africa. There are also fears of epidemics will erupt because water supplies have been contaminated. The disaster struck a band of the tropics that not only is heavily populated but also attracts tourists from all corners. Throughout the world, people sought word of missing relatives, from small-town Sri Lankan fishermen to Europeans on sand-and-sun holidays. The Chamber joins in the effort at the National level to express its regrets at the triggering circumstances that have befallen our brothers and sisters in Asia by this natural disaster. In light of the above mentioned, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry Inc is appealing at the national level to the Citizens of Guyana, Private Sector Companies and all other Stakeholders to join the Chamber in its urgent coordinated relief effort for the people of South-East Asia. Please be informed that the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry Inc has started a South-East Asia Relief Fund at its Secretariat {156, Waterloo Street} where citizens and companies can donate monies in the form of cash or cheque whether the contribution is small or medium. Additionally the Chamber is schedule to have a Telethon on Tuesday 4th of January 2005 at the NCN Television Channel 11 to raise funds for this initiative. The Telethon would be from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. Please be advised that all monies would be sent to Key International Organizations to assist the affected people of Asia. By order of Council.
